An improvised explosive device detonated inside a Damascus cafe on Thursday, killing at least six people and injuring 22, Syrian authorities said.
A medical source at the Damascus Health Directorate Hospital told dpa that the death toll had risen to seven and that three of the injured remained in critical condition, although the information was not immediately confirmed by officials.
The Syrian Ministry of Health said in a statement that the explosion was inside a café in the Al-Hijaz area of Damascus.
A video circulating on social media showed several people lying in the café, injured and covered in blood.
Damascus Governor Maher Marwan said that security forces are analyzing surveillance camera footage from the area as part of their investigation.
He also said that all victims were civilians, including four lawyers who were inside the café.
The governor noted that the blast occurred near the Palace of Justice, where trials involving individuals accused of killings under the former regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad have been taking place. The al-Assad regime was overthrown in 2024.
