Athens suitcase murder suspect ‘claimed he killed British woman over religion’

  • The body of Elisabeth-Jane Ross, a 38-year-old Scottish woman, was discovered in a suitcase in a derelict building in Athens on 18 July.
  • Sharif Ahmadzai, a 26-year-old Afghan boxer, is widely reported to be the suspect; he allegedly confessed to the crime after being identified through video footage.
  • Following the alleged murder, Ahmadzai is accused of sending messages from Ms Ross's phone before using a burner phone to impersonate a jihadist, claiming he killed her due to her Christian faith, local newspapers reported.
  • Police allege that the suspect placed Ms Ross's body in a suitcase, transported it to the abandoned site, and subsequently used her bank card to withdraw money.
  • Ahmadzai has been charged with manslaughter, robbery, and violation of weapons laws, after a replica pistol and knife were allegedly found at his home.
