THE Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) office in Central Luzon is sustaining its efforts to strengthen the country’s coconut industry by expanding technical support to farmers in Bataan, with 25 coconut farmers from different municipalities in the province among the most recent beneficiaries.
The program, carried out with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), places particular emphasis on hybridization and nursery management. Officials said these two areas are central to improving the quality of planting materials and to building coconut farms that can remain productive over the long term.
The ATI and PCA are agencies under the Department of Agriculture (DA).
Coconut remains one of the Philippines’ most important agricultural commodities. It supports millions of livelihoods, contributes to rural economies, and supplies both domestic and export markets. In Central Luzon, Bataan is among the provinces where coconut farming is a key source of income for many households.
Under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the national government has prioritized measures to modernize agriculture and raise productivity across priority commodities. For coconut, the focus includes improving access to quality planting materials and strengthening the technical capacity of farmers.
The ATI Central Luzon office said that sustained training is one way to address gaps in knowledge and to help farmers adopt practices that can lead to healthier trees and better yields. The agency said that hybridization and nursery management are critical because the quality of seedlings directly affects the performance of a coconut plantation for decades.
Hybridization involves the careful selection and breeding of coconut varieties to produce planting materials with desirable traits such as vigor, early bearing, and adaptability to local conditions. ATI said that when done properly, hybridization can help farmers establish plantations that are more productive and resilient.
Nursery management, meanwhile, ensures that selected seednuts develop into healthy seedlings. Proper care during the early stages of growth influences survival rates after planting and the overall productivity of the farm. ATI said that improving farmers’ understanding of these processes is essential to raising industry standards at the farm level.
The effort is under the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan, which seeks to revitalize the sector through improved production practices, better planting materials, and stronger support for coconut farmers and their organizations.
The latest group of 25 participants from Bataan came from various municipalities with active coconut areas. ATI said reaching farmers across the province is part of its strategy to ensure that support is accessible where it is needed most.
For the farmers involved, the program provided new knowledge they plan to apply to their own farms.
Mirla Castro of the Victory Coconut Farmers Organization Inc. said the experience addressed a need in her community.
“I learned how to breed hybrid coconuts. We also have a coconut plantation, but we lack the necessary knowledge. Now, I will apply what I have learned here to our small farm,” Castro said.
The ATI Central Luzon office stressed that the initiative in Bataan is part of a continuing series of programs. The institute said it will keep implementing capacity-building efforts to reach more coconut farmers in the region to strengthen technical competencies across farming communities.
