Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 at Almeria on Sunday as Sergio Reguilon saw red.
Angel Correa gave Atletico an 18th-minute lead in Andalucia but El Bilal Toure equalised before the break.
Neither side could find a winner in the second half, with Atletico ending the game with 10 men after Reguilon was sent off.
The draw does take Atletico back into the top four, although only because Real Betis are not playing this weekend due to their involvement in the Spanish Supercopa this past week.
Atletico, Villarreal and Betis are all tied on 28 points, but the latter have a game in hand on the other two.
All three are now seven points behind Real Sociedad, who strengthened their grip on third with a 3-1 win over Athletic Club in Saturday's Basque derby.
