KUALA LUMPUR — Police have arrested a 65-year-old man suspected of smashing the screens of automated teller machines at several bank branches in Jinjang here, allegedly after becoming enraged when he was unable to withdraw money.
Sentul district police chief ACP Basri Sagoni said the suspect was detained at about 3.21pm yesterday. Police also seized a motorcycle, a helmet, clothing and a stone believed to have been used to damage the machines.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect used a stone to smash the ATM screens after he became dissatisfied when he failed to withdraw money,” he said in a statement, according to Bernama.
With the arrest, police believe they have solved five previously reported cases of mischief involving damaged ATM screens in the area.
Basri said investigations are ongoing and the papers will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.
Members of the public with information are urged to contact the Sentul district police headquarters operations room at 03-40482222 or the nearest police station.
