More snow is expected this week in the US northeast and New England after a large winter storm swept the region on Tuesday.

The nor’easter left one person dead, closed schools, and caused hundreds of flight cancellations and road accidents. It also caused significant flooding in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and tens of thousands of people were left without power.

A man died after crashing his snowmobile in Pennsylvania on Tuesday morning, Newberry Township police told CBS. The 20-year-old was killed after hitting a downed utility line.

While some places saw 15 inches of snow, the accumulations were less than expected in other locations. New York’s Central Park got around three inches of snow - the most in two years - but less than the six inches originally forecast.

On Wednesday, a storm whipped up over central states and was likely to bring bursts of heavy snow, around 2 inches per hour early on Thursday morning, from southern Wisconsin into southern lower Michigan. Temperatures are expected to drop to -15C in places.

The storm is expected to lead to accumulating snowfall across the Great Lakes, and into the northeast by Thursday night/Friday morning, with several inches possible.

On the west coast, a new system was forecast to come ashore on Wednesday from the Pacific, with moderate to heavy rain expected in coastal areas of the northwest, and northern California. The region has been battered by atmospheric river conditions in recent weeks.

By Thursday, this latest storm will have moved well inland, bringing heavy snow to the Cascades, Sierra Nevada, and also the northern Rockies.
