AN attempt to help an injured motorcyclist took a violent turn when the would-be Good Samaritan was punched by the very man he sought to assist, sparking a roadside altercation that later went viral on social media.
Seberang Perai Utara District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Anuar Abdul Rahman, confirmed the incident and said the suspect is still at large.
“We received a report from a local man at the Butterworth Police Station regarding a riot involving a group of men,” he said in a statement on Friday.
“The incident occurred when the complainant tried to assist a motorcyclist who had fallen and was lying on the road following an accident. Suddenly, the suspect got up and punched the complainant, and began inciting members of the public nearby to join him in a fight.
“The suspect is believed to have reacted aggressively after allegedly hearing derogatory remarks from unidentified onlookers while he was lying on the road,” Anuar added.
Several videos of the incident have since circulated online, showing the suspect apparently being assaulted while on the ground and escalating into a chaotic altercation.
Police have urged the public not to sensationalise the incident or disrupt public order, stressing that a full investigation is underway.
“The suspect is being tracked and will be arrested,” said Anuar.
The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.
Members of the public with relevant information are urged to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Muhammad Adib Ikmal Sukri, at 04-5762222 ext. 2275, or report to the nearest police station.” - August 16, 2025
