POLICE reported that an attempted jewellery scam at a gold shop on Jalan Chabang Tiga in Kuala Terengganu yesterday was foiled when a 36-year-old man tried to pay for RM30,000 worth of gold with a bundle of counterfeit banknotes.
Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor, said the shop assistant noticed something unusual and later filed a report at Kuala Terengganu Police Station at 6.31 pm.
According to the report, the suspect, described as a man in his early 30s wearing a white kopiah, dark sunglasses, and a pink face mask, approached the shop counter around 3.10 pm.
The man expressed his intention to purchase jewellery, and a colleague of the shop assistant showed him several gold bracelets under the shop assistant’s supervision.
“The suspect reportedly took photographs of the jewellery, claiming he wanted to show them to his wife. After coming in and out of the shop twice, he indicated he wished to purchase the items,” Azli said.
The police chief added that when the shop assistant asked the suspect to hand over the payment for verification, the assistant noticed the notes appeared suspicious because the printed edges were white, unlike genuine currency.
“When the assistant tried to inspect the money more closely, the suspect allegedly became aggressive and fled in a dark blue Perodua Axia parked outside the shop. Police later discovered that the vehicle’s registration number was fake,” Azli said.
He noted that the full CCTV footage has yet to be obtained, and authorities are reviewing cameras at nearby shops to assist the investigation. No losses were recorded from the incident, which is being investigated under Section 489B of the Penal Code. - December 19, 2025
