THE Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has directed that an inquest be held into the death of 13-year-old student Zara Qairina Mahathir, following a review of the investigation report submitted by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).
In a statement issued today, the AGC said the decision was made to ensure clarity on the cause and circumstances surrounding the death.
“The purpose of the inquest is to determine the cause and reason of death, including whether any criminal elements were involved in the passing of Zara Qairina,” the statement read.

The AGC added that the inquest is being initiated under subsection 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593).
“This process will be conducted independently and transparently at the Coroner’s Court in accordance with legal provisions,” the statement concluded.
Zara Qairina’s death, reported last month at a religious boarding school in Papar, Sabah, has sparked national concern and widespread calls for accountability. - August 13, 2025
