Electric car popularity is rising in Malaysia despite the slowdown in public battery charging infrastructure and new import duty regulations.

Meanwhile, used electric cars are rising also and prices for some models are very hard to ignore. Especially premium brand EV’s like the Audi etron GT (which is very close cousin to the Porsche Taycan).

Recently we were asked by a reader is buying a used etron GT is worth considering due to its high depreciation. Well, as long as the car is a direct import from Audi Malaysia and has all the checks done with the Malaysian dealer, it is worth a look.

Why, well to start, the selling price at RM246k is hard to ignore when you realise this 2023 car has lost more than 58% of its value in 3 years (selling price from RM587,990 at launch) and still retains more than 90% of its battery storage.

Some time in 2024, the new selling price dropped to just RM399,990 as demand started reducing. 

Buying a used Audi e-tron GT can be a fantastic deal due to its steep initial depreciation, offering supercar-level performance and luxury at a fraction of its original price. 

However, you must account for high out-of-warranty repair costs, complex electrical systems, and potential charging hardware quirks.To evaluate used listings and check market values in your area, 

Even the base e-tron GT boasts rapid acceleration (0-100 km/h in around 4 seconds), while the RS variant is blistering.

As mentioned earlier, it shares a platform with the Porsche Taycan, meaning it offers a plush cabin, aggressive styling, and a remarkably comfortable ride.

Battery Warranty: The high-voltage battery is typically backed by an 8-year or 160,000km factory warranty, protecting you against severe degradation.

Once outside the factory warranty, electrical, suspension, or specialized hardware repairs can be exceptionally expensive.

Owners have reported minor software glitches (triggering warning lights) and DC fast-charging stalls that require dealer software updates or part replacements.

The sloping roofline makes the rear seats tight, and headroom is somewhat restricted compared to traditional luxury sedans.

Have a dealership run a full health diagnostic on the high-voltage battery and cooling hardware to ensure the previous owner hasn’t caused premature degradation with abusive charging habits.

Ensure all factory recalls (such as the high-voltage battery inspection) have been completed prior to purchasing.

If you can secure an extended warranty or CPO coverage and afford the premium maintenance, it is an amazing electric super car to buy used. If you want a trouble-free motoring and guaranteed resale value, you may be better off looking for a compact ASEAN sedan.
