The Australian Open continues as Jack Draper came from behind to beat home favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis in a five-set epic, joining Great Britain’s Jacob Fearnley in the third round.
British No 1 Draper silenced the home crowd as he performed a stunning escape to beat Kokkinakis in the longest match of the tournament so far. The Australian served for a place in the third round at the end of the fourth set but Draper stayed alive, winning 6-7 6-3 3-6 7-5 6-3 against a raucous crowd in the longest match of the 23-year-old’s career.
Meanwhile, Fearnley reached the third round on his Australian Open debut with a comeback victory over Arthur Cazaux. Fearnley dropped the first set after a rain delay but the Scot did not blink and came back to win 3-6 7-5 6-2 6-3. His astonishing rise will continue when he plays the second seed Alexander Zverev for a place in the last-16.
Jodie Burrage gave World No 3 Coco Gauff a brief scare on Rod Laver Arena but fell to a straight-sets defeat. Burrage served to level the match but Gauff recovered to win the final four games of a 6-3 7-5 win.
Harriet Dart is also out after threatening an upset against Olympics runner-up and 18th seed Donna Vekic. Dart won the opening set but managed just two more games, as Vekic came from behind to win 4-6 6-0 6-2.

Jodie Burrage took the fight to Coco Gauff before falling to a second-round loss at the Australian Open.
The 25-year-old Briton won only two games the last time the pair met on grass in 2023 but she threatened to take the game’s form player to a deciding set before going down 6-3 7-5.
Burrage missed most of last season with wrist and ankle injuries and vowed to enjoy the experience of playing on one of the biggest courts in the world.

Emma Raducanu bids to make the Australian Open third round as she faces Amanda Anisimova, with Katie Boulter also in action.
Raducanu admitted her serve had a “mind of its own” during her opening win but the 22-year-old nevertheless claimed an impressive result against 26th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.
She now faces American Anisimova, who reached the semi-finals of the French Open and quarter-finals of Wimbledon before taking time away from tennis in 2023 for her mental health.
Later on, British No 1 Boulter takes on Veronika Kudermetova as she bids to reach the third round of the Australian Open for the first time. Boulter battled to a close win over Rebecca Marino in her first match.
Elsewhere, defending Australian Open champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka are in action, with Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca looks to back up his stunning opening ninth seed Andrey Rublev.

Jack Draper proud of physical efforts during Australian Open
15:52
Jack Draper came into the Australian Open with concerns over his physical condition after missing a bulk of his pre-season with a hip injury, but the 15th seed has now survived two five-set matches in a row to reach the third round.
There was a notable improvement in Draper’s performance levels from his opening win over Marione Navone and although he believes there is more to come he is taking pride in how his body is holding up as he looks to build on last season’s run to the US Open semi-finals.
“It’s been really difficult in the last few years with question marks over long matches and backing up performances,” Draper said. “I wouldn’t say I’m playing my best tennis. Obviously I’ve had a tough preparation, but I’m proud of my mentality, my body and the way I competed.
“It’s a huge step forward. I’ve been working physically for a long time. As a young player, when you come into these big events, you have to deal with the media, the crowds. It was a bit too much for me at the start.
“I feel like, especially at the back end of last year, I built a lot of confidence in myself, a lot of belief. I think winning titles and making the semi-finals of the US Open, it gave me that security in my mind that I’m good enough and I’m doing the right things.
“It has given me calmness as well. Instead of carrying a lot on my shoulders, I feel a lot calmer. I feel a lot more relaxed.”
Jack Draper reveals abuse from Australian Open crowd
15:18
Jamie Braidwood
Jack Draper said the abuse he received during his thrilling five-set Australian Open comeback over home favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis inspired him to raise his level as the British No 1 reached the third round of the grand slam for the first time.
Draper held his finger to his ear at several points during the 6-7 (3) 6-3 3-6 7-5 6-3 victory, with chair umpire Marijana Veljovic struggling to contain the home fans and control the atmosphere.
Draper is likely to face a similar scenario when he plays Australian Aleksandar Vukic in the third round but the 23-year-old said that the hostile crowd gave him energy and made him play better.
“It was amazing,” Draper said. “Obviously an electric atmosphere. I was getting quite a lot of abuse from the crowd in between serves and at the back of the court, all that stuff.
“Sometimes you don’t want to rile them or give it back. But to be fair, it gave me energy doing that. There were times where I was down, then I came through a tough game. It gave me energy giving it back, give it a bit of an ear.
“They are saying stuff to me, some interesting things for sure. You can probably imagine. In between serves, the whistling, the talking. I mean, it’s all fun but when you’re about to serve, it’s really difficult. I have a thick skin. It’s fun.”
Australian Open: Jakub Mensik on the arrival on the 'next gen'
14:51
Jamie Braidwood
Jakub Mensik on the arrival of the “next gen” at the Australian Open after the 19-year-old’s victory over three-time grand slam finalist Casper Ruud.
Mensik said the early success of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner has been an inspiration to the new players, born in the 2000s, who are starting to come through.
“All the young players which are playing here, even which are not here, they trying the best to reach the same level.
“For example, like Jannik and Carlos, they were still teenagers a few years ago. We can approach the same and go by their steps and try to reach the same level, compete against them.
“It's great that there is a new blood always. We can see that tennis is moving on. We can see different or new names on the tournaments.
“For the fans, for the tennis, for everything, it's really great. That's it. New blood is coming.”

Casper Ruud, the sixth seed, became the latest big name to fall at the Australian Open following a breakthrough win from Czech teenager Jakub Mensik.

Australian Open: Thanasi Kokkinakis on his injury
14:21
Jamie Braidwood
Thanasi Kokkinakis has confirmed that he suffered a muscle tear in his upper body before even stepping out onto court against Jack Draper and tried to play through the pain.
“Shoulder was gone before the match,” he said. “I just tried to tough it out. I was touch-and-go again to play this week.
“Took a million painkillers to try and get through. I knew after I had some serious decisions to make, and I'm going to miss some time. I just tried to kind of empty the tank today and for this week and see what I can do.
“I put myself in a winning position. I didn't have enough to get over, so that's annoying. Playing through the first one, playing through that one, I just know even if I win, at what cost? I know I'm going to be out for a while, I think. Yeah, I'm pretty flat.”
He described himself as “p---ed” and “seething” after losing in five sets.

Australian Open: Jacob Fearnley on next match
14:06
Jamie Braidwood
Jacob Fearnley looks ahead to facing World No 2 Alexander Zverev as he prepares to play in the third round of a grand slam for the first time.
“It's another massive match. I assume it will be on a big court. Obviously he's No. 2 in the world. He's playing unbelievable. I'm aware that all these matches that I'm getting are extremely challenging.
“Yeah, I do get nervous, but I know how lucky I am to have these experiences and play these matches. Like I said in other kind of interviews, these matches don't come around often.
“I'm trying to cherish them and stay in the present moment really and just try and enjoy these massive matches because they are some of the biggest that I can play.”

Jack Draper evokes Andy Murray spirit to seal thrilling Australian Open comeback
13:50
Eleanor Crooks
Jack Draper conjured the spirit of Andy Murray to claw his way back from the brink of defeat against home favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Australian Open.
Two years ago, Murray famously recovered from two sets and a break down against Kokkinakis to win a second-round match that finished at 4.05am.
It was not quite midnight when Draper completed a 6-7 (3) 6-3 3-6 7-5 6-3 victory, holding his fist aloft in celebration of a memorable effort.
But by that point the pair had been locked in a power battle on a raucous John Cain Arena for four hours and 35 minutes, with Kokkinakis serving for the match in the fourth set despite struggling with a pectoral problem but again unable to defeat his British foe.

Who is Jacob Fearnley? Level-headed Scot continues incredible rise at Australian Open
13:27
Jamie Braidwood
Great Britain’s Jacob Fearnley continued his impressive Australian Open debut as he came from a set down to defeat Frenchman Arthur Cazaux and book a mouthwatering match against World No 2 Alexander Zverev in the third round.
Fearnley subdued a hostile atmosphere to beat Nick Kyrgios in the opening round and he continued his incredible rise by defeating Cazaux 3-6 7-5 6-2 6-3 following a rain delay, in what was just his fourth ever match at the grand slam level.
The 23-year-old Scot was the World No 646 this time last year but shot up the rankings after turning professional last season, breaking into the world’s top 100 to qualify for the Melbourne grand slam.

Australian Open: Jack Draper beats Thanasi Kokkinakis in five-set epic
13:24
What a day for British tennis at the Australian Open as Jack Draper and Jacob Fearnley reach the third round of the tournament for the first time.
In terms of the draw, Draper will now face Australian Aleksandar Vukic for a place in the fourth round. Vukic upset 22nd seed Sebastian Korda, in another five-setter. Draper is now also a win away from potentially facing Carlos Alcaraz in the fourth round, but he won’t underestimate Vukic.
Fearnley, meanwhile, will get a crack at second seed Alexander Zverev. The German, who reached the semi-finals here last season, is yet to drop a set in Melbourne and looks on strong form, but Fearnley has nothing to lose and has looked impressive so far. That match could be scheduled for a big show-court.
Those third-round matches will take place on Friday.

McEnroe, who was commentating, says the home Australian crowd were “electric” as they supported Kokkinakis. I would say it was way over the top and a bit disrespectful of Draper.
But the British No 1 rose to it. “This is what I play for. I want to play in front of big crowds and whether you guys are with me or against me... it’s a tough atmosphere to deal with but I had fun back.”
He definitely did. And guess what? He plays another Australian next. Aleksander Vukic awaits in R3!

“I’m proud of the way I competed out there and the way I came through.
“It’s difficult, credit to him as he was hurting a lot. He gave it all and it was a great fight.
“I didn’t know if I was fit to play here but my tennis is improving. My first match was four hours - I don’t want to be out here for that long but I’m really proud of the way I’m going about my tennis.”

Still grimacing through the pain, Kokkinakis roars as he puts away an overhead, and then lands a big first serve down the middle.
He still can’t get the hold, though, as Draper finds an extraordinary return right onto the corner of the baseline.
Draper, surely, just has to say patient and play the long game. He can back himself to last physically against Kokkinakis

A huge roar from the Scots and British fans out on Court Three as Jacob Fearnley wins the second set to level the match against Arthur Cazaux!
A rocket of a forehand from the 23-year-old set up three set points, and he stayed on the offensive to draw the error from the Frenchman.
A really solid set from Fearnley, but still a long way to go in this one.

After his medical timeout for treatment on his shoulder, Kokkinakis comes out to hit perhaps his hardest forehand winner of the match, an absolute scorcher that flew past Draper.
The Aussie holds to love to stay ahead as he plays through the pain.

This is a proper early round grand slam battle between Fearnley and Cazaux out on Court Three.
The Scot had a great chance to level the match after breaking ahead against the Frenchman, but a missed volley on 5-3 15-15 proved costly as Cazaux broke back.
He is still in a great position and holds serve to reach the tiebreak at least.

Kokkinakis grimaces after holding serve from deuce, but the Australian has now called the physio to have a look at his shoulder.
It’s his right arm and Kokkinakis looks to be in a lot of pain. A medical timeout is called and the treatment begins.
Australian Open: SET! Harriet Dart 6-4 Donna Vekic

Jamie Braidwood
Another British player in action today, Harriet Dart, has taken the first set against Olympic silver medallist and 18th seed Donna Vekic!
This could be an incredible story. Dart entered the draw as a lucky loser - after losing in qualifying she got through as an injury replacement.
But she is making the most of her chance. After beating Jana Fett in the round, Dart takes the opening set 6-4 against Vekic out on Court 14.

There’s a very noisy section of French fans out on Court Six who are making quite the racket in support of their man Arthur Cazaux.
Jacob Fearnley is battling hard, though. He comes back from a break down at the start of the second set to level at 3-3.
He even had chances to break ahead but Cazaux found a stunning pass to save and then hold, much to the delight of his fans.
It’s finely poised.

Australian Open: SET! Jack Draper 6-7 6-3 Thanasi Kokkinakis

Jamie Braidwood
Here we go! Jack is back as Draper holds his serve to level the match at a set-all. The British No 1 passes a big test by getting back on level terms, and he has managed to quiten the crowd after Kokkinakis had the John Cain Arena rocking in the first hour or so.
Solid from Draper. From 3-3 in the second, he wins three games in a row to win the set.
The story, though, is that Kokkinakis went completely off the boil. The Aussie’s serve disappeared (his first serve falling from above 90 per cent to the mid-60s) and it made such a difference. Without being able to dictate, his winners fell to 10 and the unforced errors climbed to 13.
Draper was pretty similar to the first set. Consistency is key.

Break! Jack Draper pumps his fist and Kokkinakis shrugs at the latest twist in this second set. Draper breaks but that was all on Kokkinakis’ racket. The Australian came into the net but Draper fired the backhand straight at him as the Australian dumped the volley into the net.
Draper now has the chance to serve for the set.
Australian Open: Coco Gauff 6-3 7-5 Jodie Burrage

Coco Gauff with a lot of praise for Jodie Burrage after reaching the third round of the Australian Open.
“It was tough, she was serving really well, I was trying to manage that honestly. She really stepped her level up midway through the second set, so I was trying to be offensive when I could.
“She was returning well and putting pressure on my serve, if I put anything short she was hitting a winner. I told myself to keep playing deep and on the offensive.”

Australian Open: Jack Draper 6-7 4-3 Thanasi Kokkinakis*

On the John Cain Arena, it’s almost as if we’re back where we were in the opening set. Thanasi Kokkinakis has found his fire after going 0-3 down, and Jack Draper will have to raise it again after letting the Australian off the hook,
Draper fires down two aces to get a hold. At least he is serving first in this second set, which could be key down the line if we’re getting closer to a tiebreak.

GAME, SET AND MATCH!
Coco Gauff is through! The World No 3 defeats Jodie Burrage in straight-sets, but it was a great fight from the Briton - who missed almost all of last season due to injury.
There will be some regrets. Burrage had chances in the second set and led 5-3 with the chance to serve for a deciding set.
Gauff was struggling but errors from Burrage gave her the chance to fight on, and Gauff won the last four games in a row to squeak through.
“It was tough,” Gauff says. Burrage heads off court but will take a lot of heart from her showing on Rod Laver Arena.

Australian Open: Jack Draper 6-7 3-2 Thanasi Kokkinakis*

Break! Kokkinakis comes alive again and produces a backhand winner past the advancing Draper to break back in the second set.
Stunning winner from Kokkinakis, but Draper could not keep the door closed after saving break point in the previous game.
Back on serve in the second.
