MOTORISTS have been urged to comply strictly with the full closure of FT036 at Section 89.00 of Jalan Aring 8–Tasik Kenyir–Kuala Jeneris in Hulu Terengganu, following a fatal incident in which an engaged couple were killed after their vehicle plunged into a ravine yesterday.
Terengganu Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Hanafiah Mat said drivers must use the designated alternative routes provided by the authorities to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy.
"Public safety is always a priority and any risky action must be avoided. We also hope the community will continue to extend full cooperation to the authorities until this infrastructure rehabilitation project can be initiated and completed within the stipulated timeframe," he said in a statement.
The couple died at the scene after their sports utility vehicle veered off the closed road and fell more than 60 metres into a ravine at Kilometre 52 of Jalan Kuala Jeneris–Sungai Gawi–Aring (Bukit Kawah), Kuala Berang.
The victims were travelling from Hulu Terengganu towards Gua Musang along a route that had already been shut due to previous landslide damage.
The road had been completely closed after heavy monsoon rains triggered a landslide in November last year.
Expressing condolences over the latest tragedy, Hanafiah said no temporary bypass had been opened at the site because risk assessments indicated ongoing instability that posed a serious danger to road users.
Earlier, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi wrote on Facebook that the Public Works Department (JKR) had installed clear warning signs and concrete barricades as a safety measure, with continuous monitoring carried out jointly with the concessionaire.
"This closure has been gazetted under Section 70 of the Road Transport Act 1987, covering part of Federal Route FT36 from Section 55.60 to Section 139.30," he said.
Separately in Gua Musang, additional concrete barriers have been installed by JKR to block access to landslide-affected areas along Jalan Gua Musang–Lojing near Pos Blau. District police chief Superintendent Sik Choon Foo said the concessionaire, Roadcare (M) Sdn Bhd, had placed the barriers at two locations: KM44 of Jalan Gua Musang–Lojing and KM48 of Jalan Lojing–Gua Musang.
"We hope all road users, including motorcyclists, will not endanger their lives by passing through the landslide area. So far, two summonses have been issued to motorcyclists who violated the road closure order," he said.
Sik added that police may take action against anyone breaching the closure of Jalan Gua Musang–Lojing, with offenders liable to a RM500 compound under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Earlier reports stated that a teenage boy suffered a broken left arm on 3 December when the vehicle he was driving plunged into a ravine at KM45 of Jalan Gua Musang–Lojing after a landslide.
Kelantan JKR director Nik Badlihisham Nik Ismail said the department is currently assessing repair works at the landslide location, with engineering officers from the Slope Engineering Branch having carried out an inspection on 3 December.
"Motorists may use existing federal roads as alternative routes," he said.
The Gua Musang–Lojing road (FT185) at Section 107.6 near Pos Blau has been fully closed to all vehicles since 3 December following the landslide. - December 6, 2025
