Dharamsala-based dermatologist and noted birder Dr Abhinav Chaudhary has photographed over 600 bird species and 25 additional subspecies in Himachal Pradesh, making it one of the most extensive individual photographic records of the state’s avifauna. The collection includes several rare and accidental visitors that have been recorded only a handful of times. Dr Chaudhary has contributed over 60 scientific papers and around 30 new bird records for the state.
The milestone assumes significance as the state’s official bird checklist, published in 2017, documented 672 species, with the tally now believed to be nearing 700. Dr Chaudhary serves in the Zonal Hospital, Dharamsala, and has spent around 25 years documenting birds.

His work is being hailed as a major contribution, providing valuable visual records of Himachal’s rich biodiversity. It also draws attention to the urgent need to conserve the state’s wetlands, forests and high-altitude ecosystems that serve as vital habitats for hundreds of resident and migratory bird species.
Dr Chaudhary says that the milestone is a reminder of the responsibility that comes with documenting the nature. “Every bird photographed represents countless hours of patience, travel and learning but it also tells the story of an ecosystem that must survive for future generations. My greatest concern is not whether I can add another species to my list but whether future birders will still have the habitats and the wildlife to experience.”
He says, “Hunting, shrinking forests, vanishing wetlands and unchecked development are silently eroding our natural heritage. Citizen science can play a vital role but conservation requires collective action from governments, communities and individuals. I hope my work inspires more people to look closely at the birds around them, appreciate their beauty and recognise their importance.”
