Happy Divali Everyone!
As Deepavali approaches, many Malaysians are eagerly planning for the long holiday weekend.
For some of us, the thought of a quick getaway to Thailand may seem like the perfect plan.
However, with recent insurgent activities in Southern Thailand, particularly in the provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, and Pattani, caution should be the priority.
In the span of just two days, from October 9 to 10, these regions have witnessed seven bombings, resulting in the tragic deaths of both a policeman and a resident.
This spike in violence is a grim reminder that the southern provinces of Thailand, though known for their cultural richness and natural beauty, are also hotspots for insurgent activity.
The deep-rooted unrest in this region, which has persisted for years, rarely spills into mainstream news unless tragedies like these bombings occur.
But for those familiar with the situation, these provinces have long been a flashpoint of violence, particularly targeting security forces.
The Malaysian police (PDRM) has wisely issued a public advisory urging caution for Malaysians planning to visit Thailand during the Deepavali break.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain’s statement is a timely reminder to stay informed about the regions being visited and to avoid the more dangerous areas.
This advice is particularly pertinent for those crossing the border into Thailand from northern states like Kedah, Perlis, and Kelantan, as the proximity to these troubled provinces makes them natural travel destinations.
Narathiwat, for example, often sees a stream of Malaysian tourists who enjoy visiting its coastal villages like Ban Thon. The village, with its quaint scenery and the curious sight of low-flying planes near a popular restaurant, is a draw for many. Yet, the risk that comes with traveling in an area close to insurgent activity cannot be ignored.
For those unfamiliar with the nature of the conflict in Southern Thailand, it is rooted in a long-standing separatist movement, fueled by ethnic and religious divisions. Insurgent groups target government forces and infrastructure, often using bombings and other violent means. While tourists may not be the primary targets, the nature of these attacks can be unpredictable and devastating.
Many Malaysians, drawn by the affordable prices and cultural similarities in Southern Thailand, may be tempted to brush off these warnings. After all, Thailand is a major travel destination for Malaysians, and with the festive season around the corner, the allure of a holiday abroad is strong.
But it is precisely because of this familiarity and the frequent crossings at the border that Malaysians should be even more vigilant. The reality of the situation is that insurgencies don’t distinguish between locals and visitors when violence erupts.
For those still set on visiting Thailand, it’s crucial to stay informed. Monitor the latest travel advisories from both PDRM and local Thai authorities, ensure you avoid high-risk areas, and maintain a heightened sense of awareness.
We must remember that a vacation, no matter how eagerly anticipated, isn’t worth risking your safety. Alternatives abound, and for this year’s Deepavali, perhaps staying closer to home might be the safer option.
As the holiday season approaches, let us all take a moment to prioritise our well-being and the safety of our families.
While Southern Thailand remains a popular destination for Malaysians, now is not the time to take unnecessary risks. Instead, consider destinations that promise a safer and more peaceful experience, so you can truly enjoy the festival of lights with your loved ones.
Safe travels, and happy Deepavali!
