THE upcoming by-election in the Ayer Kuning state constituency is being closely watched as a critical test for both Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) to measure current public support.
The result is seen as a reflection of how well the government's policies are being received by the electorate, particularly in light of some decisions, such as the removal of subsidies.
Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Senior Political Science Lecturer Dr. Ariff Aizuddin Azlan noted that while the by-election may be on a smaller scale, it provides valuable insight into grassroots sentiment.
"Every by-election carries its own significance and implications. It gives a snapshot of public opinion at a smaller, more localised level," he explained in an interview with Sinar Harian.
The political stakes are high, as both BN and PH are looking to secure a win to demonstrate their political strength.
Dr. Ariff added that the results could signal how well the government is navigating issues that have sparked public discontent, such as the controversial withdrawal of diesel subsidies.
"The impact of these decisions will inevitably reflect in the outcome of the by-election," he said.
BN, led by Umno president Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, has emphasised the importance of this victory, stating that it is crucial for the unity government’s continued success.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also expressed his desire to maintain momentum from recent by-election victories in Nenggiri and Mahkota, aiming to continue that trend in Ayer Kuning.
Dr. Ariff Aizuddin remarked that BN would need to work particularly hard to retain its hold on the constituency, given that recent policies have not favoured the government.
"What they need is to craft a fresh, compelling narrative that resonates with voters on the ground. Alongside this, BN will need strong support from its political partner, PH, to shape this narrative and influence the electorate's mindset," he said.
He also pointed out that the Ayer Kuning by-election would serve as a crucial opportunity for BN and PH to persuade voters on why they should support the current government.
"If they fail to present a convincing narrative, there is a real risk that voters will turn to the opposition, particularly Perikatan Nasional (PN), as a viable alternative," he said.
This by-election, according to Dr. Ariff, represents more than just a battle for political power—it is an opportunity for BN, in particular, to demonstrate its ability to connect with voters and present a vision that goes beyond promises of development. – April 9, 2025
