THE provisions of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 [Act 694] are considered sufficient to combat corruption in the country, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Law and Institutional Reforms, has affirmed.

Speaking in Parliament while responding to a question from Pang Hok Liong (PH-Labis), she emphasised that the existing legal framework allows the MACC to compel individuals to disclose information regarding their assets.

“Based on input received from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the legal provisions under Section 36 of the MACC Act are adequate to require any individual to provide information to the MACC concerning assets owned by them,” she said.

She added that the law mandates disclosure not only of legal ownership but also of any interest in assets under equity, specifying the date of acquisition and the manner in which the property was obtained.

Looking ahead, Datuk Seri Azalina noted that the MACC remains receptive to proposals for enhancements from all quarters, signalling a willingness to strengthen anti-corruption measures where necessary.

The minister’s statement comes amid ongoing public and parliamentary discourse on transparency and asset declaration requirements for officials, underscoring the government’s reliance on current legislation while remaining open to reforms. - February 10, 2026
