Tan Sri Azam Baki, the head of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), has announced that the two sons of former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad are permitted to re-apply for an extension to declare their assets. However, Azam emphasized that any such application would be subject to review.

Azam clarified that a one-month extension had already been granted to Tan Sri Mokhzani, Dr. Mahathir's son. This decision was deemed reasonable due to the extensive nature of Mokhzani's assets. Azam mentioned that Mokhzani needed additional time to compile the relevant documents and details for the declaration.

Responding to questions from the media at the 10th Certified Integrity Officer Programme Convocation Ceremony held at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTC), Azam affirmed that both sons of Dr. Mahathir could apply for further extensions, but each case would be thoroughly reviewed by the MACC before any decision is made.

The ongoing investigation by the MACC involves probing into the assets of Dr. Mahathir's sons, who have been asked to disclose their assets as part of the process. Earlier this month, Tan Sri Mirzan Mahathir, the older brother of Mokhzani, was also granted a one-month extension for the same purpose.

The MACC issued notices to Mirzan under Section 36 (1)(b) of the MACC Act, requiring him to declare all movable and immovable assets, both domestic and international, within 30 days from January 18. Meanwhile, Mokhzani is currently under investigation under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

The investigation has necessitated the submission of a comprehensive list of assets dating back to 1981, the year their father assumed office as the prime minister for the first time. This requirement underscores the depth and scope of the MACC's inquiry into potential financial irregularities or improprieties associated with the Mahathir family.
