In a significant development, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed an ongoing investigation into former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, along with his two sons, businessmen Tan Sri Mokhzani and Mirzan.

Speaking from Gua Musang, MACC's chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, affirmed that Dr Mahathir is indeed a subject of the graft probe. The investigation stems from inquiries into the activities of his two sons.

Azam clarified that Dr Mahathir's sons were issued notices to disclose their assets within the stipulated timeframe as mandated under Section 36 of the MACC Act 2009. However, specific details regarding the alleged offenses were not disclosed by Azam.

When pressed for further information, Azam emphasized the importance of allowing the investigations to reach their conclusion before divulging specifics. "I cannot give any details on the offenses. Let the investigations conclude first, and we will elaborate at an appropriate time," he asserted.

The investigation gained momentum in January when Mirzan received a notice prompting him to declare his assets, both domestically and internationally, within 30 days. This notice was issued in connection to information obtained from the Panama Papers and the Pandora Papers.

Subsequently, Mokhzani found himself under scrutiny by the MACC and was investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001.

In statements to Bloomberg, Mokhzani and Mirzan asserted that their father, Dr Mahathir, was the primary target of the MACC's probe. They claimed that they were summoned to assist in the investigation concerning Dr Mahathir's activities.

Dr Mahathir himself expressed perplexity at the indirect approach taken by MACC, questioning why accusations of graft were directed at his sons rather than directly to him. Nonetheless, he affirmed his readiness to cooperate with any investigation.

The confirmation of MACC's investigation into Dr Mahathir and his sons marks a significant development in Malaysian political and legal spheres. As the investigation unfolds, there is anticipation regarding the potential ramifications and outcomes of this high-profile probe.
