The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki has pushed back against allegations suggesting that the agency acted under political influence when carrying out investigations involving individuals said to be rivals of Nurul Izzah Anwar. He clarified that MACC’s operational decisions were anchored strictly on legal provisions and established investigative standards.

Azam’s response came after former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli alleged in a podcast that MACC had targeted an individual purely because the person contested against Nurul Izzah in an internal party race. He also claimed that several PKR members who were not aligned with the party’s top leadership had been detained by the anti-graft body ahead of the party elections last year.

According to an internal source within MACC, Azam stood firm in rejecting the accusations, stressing that no investigations were initiated on the basis of political preference or party dynamics. He maintained that the agency carried out its duties transparently and objectively, guided by principles of fairness and public accountability.

Azam conveyed that if Rafizi could provide clear details of the individual allegedly targeted for political reasons, MACC would be prepared to review the matter. However, he underscored that all investigations were triggered only when actionable complaints or credible information were received, and any subsequent steps, including verification or formal inquiry, adhered to the rule of law.

He reiterated that MACC operated independently and safeguarded its processes from any form of external interference. The chief commissioner stressed that the agency’s priority was to uphold justice and ensure that every action taken served the public interest, not the political interests of any party or individual.

MACC also highlighted the importance of responsible discourse, noting that unverified allegations risked eroding public confidence in national enforcement institutions. The agency reminded the public that concerns or dissatisfaction regarding investigative procedures should be channelled through official platforms, rather than circulated publicly without evidence.

While Rafizi’s claims have stirred discussions within political circles, MACC’s leadership has insisted that its conduct remains consistent with statutory obligations. The agency maintains that every investigation—regardless of who is involved—undergoes the same scrutiny, guided by legal requirements and procedural integrity.

The exchange between Rafizi and MACC adds a new layer to ongoing debates surrounding political influence in enforcement matters, but the commission has stressed that its commitment to impartiality remains unchanged.
