PETALING JAYA, July 18 — Selangor Bersatu chief Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said it was too early to decide on an offer from his party to become its secretary-general.

“It’s still too early as it is a long way to go before the polls,” online news portal Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reported him as saying.

He was referring to the upcoming Bersatu elections in October.

“I will discuss with the president and heed his advice,” he was quoted as saying.

Previously, sources cited by FMT indicated that Azmin had informed several division leaders of his intention to reject the position, preferring to focus on aiding Perikatan Nasional (PN) in capturing Selangor from Pakatan Harapan in the next general election.

Sources also told FMT that Azmin was reluctant to accept a perceived downgrade, considering his former role as PKR deputy president.

On July 13, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that Azmin would be offered the secretary-general post, acknowledging his capability and political experience.

Muhyiddin also noted that the current secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, would be promoted to deputy president, recognizing his contributions as PN secretary-general and opposition leader in Parliament.

In a report by Sinar Harian on Tuesday, Azmin expressed his desire to meet with Muhyiddin to discuss the offer. He added that the former prime minister was aware of his position on the matter.

It had been previously reported that Azmin was only seeking a spot on the party’s Supreme Council.
