Aston Villa boss Dean Smith was delighted for Wesley after he broke his duck in victory over Everton last night.
Wesley struck in the 2-0 triumph.
Smith said, "I am not sure there was as much of a weight on his shoulders as people have made out.
"He's a good striker. I said that from the start. I have watched him for a long period at Brugge.
"I think the one thing is that the No.9 shirt at Aston Villa is a big shirt to carry. But I am not sure he'll understand why.
"But I thought he looked like a very good old-fashioned No.9 for Aston Villa tonight."
He continued: "He's level with Mo Salah isn't he!
"Two goals in is very harsh to scrutinise a centre forward.
"I thought he had showed signs but tonight was an overall, all-round performance from him.
"It probably helped that we didn't want to make early mistakes so we went a bit longer from Tom Heaton into Wesley and I thought he competed really well and got the better of their two centre-backs and brought others into play."
