Baby girl found abandoned in a bag under car garage

A BABY girl was found alive in a bag under a car garage in front of a resident's house in Taman Semarak, Sungai Petani yesterday.

Kuala Muda police chief Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail, said police received a report regarding the discovery of the baby at 11:39 am.

He said that when found, the baby girl still had her umbilical cord attached and was placed in a maroon bag on a bench under the garage of the house.

"An inspection at the scene found no closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the vicinity and no witnesses who saw the suspect leaving the scene.

"Witnesses reported only hearing the sound of a baby crying at 11 am from the bag in question, and after opening it, they found a the baby without any clothes on," he said as reported.

Wan Azharuddin said a woman contacted the police and also put on a diaper for the baby and covered it with a cloth.

"When found, the baby was healthy and with no signs of injury."

The baby was sent to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH) for a check-up.

Details regarding the estimated age and health condition of the baby girl have not yet been obtained from the medical officer, and the discovery  has been reported to the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) for further action.

Wan Azharuddin said that the police will check with health clinics or hospitals to obtain details of those who have recently given birth.

He said that so far, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

"The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealing birth with the intention of abandoning the baby," he said. – March 10, 2025
