
Kota Kinabalu: Nearly five million students in 11 Group B states returned to school Monday for the new 2025/2026 academic year.
In SABAH, Education Department Deputy Director-General for the school operations sector, Zainal Abas, noted that the 2025/2026 school session involves 526,370 students and 43,763 teachers in 1,298 schools.

“I see the students are very excited to start the school session, and I hope they will fully focus on the education provided,” he spoke to reporters after observing the first day school operation at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Inanam, Kota Kinabalu.

Sabah Education Department Director Datuk Raisin Saidin confirmed that cleaning operations at the flood-hit schools were completed in time for their scheduled reopening.
Advertisement“Despite nearly two weeks of heavy rainfall and intermittent flooding, all Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students were able to sit for their exams without any issues,” added Raisin.
He added that the Education Ministry recently allocated RM63 million to assist schools severely affected by the floods, with the funds used for cleaning, minor repairs and replacing damaged or destroyed furniture.

“During this brief surprise visit, I took the time to listen, as education is not just about textbooks and examinations but about building dreams, seizing opportunities and shaping hopes,” he said, while extending his wishes for a joyful return to school to the children.
The Prime Minister added that behind every hope lies a responsibility that must be shouldered by all, including leaders, teachers, educators and parents, to ensure the success of the nation’s children.
In the post, Anwar recalled his experience lecturing at Georgetown University in Washington DC, where he realised the immense role that a teacher and educator played.
He said they did not only guide with knowledge, but also with love, profound kindness, wisdom and by leading through example.
Anwar also said despite the differences between school and university, the spirit of service remained the same.
