Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has described the recent release of whistleblower videos alleging corruption among state assemblymen as a calculated move to undermine the state government’s stability. With the state election looming within the next year, Hajiji called for calm and urged authorities to thoroughly investigate the claims and the motivations behind the exposé.

Allegations of Corruption

The controversy centers on videos released by a whistleblower, alleging that eight Sabah assemblymen were involved in soliciting bribes for mining licenses. Among those implicated is Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmy Yahya. The allegations have sparked significant public interest and political speculation.

Speaking to reporters after tabling the state budget, Hajiji reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency. “This is likely an attempt to weaken the state government, but I want to emphasize that our administration, which includes GRS and Pakatan Harapan Plus, remains united,” he stated.

Government Response

Hajiji emphasized the importance of letting the authorities handle the investigation, refraining from commenting further on the specifics of the allegations. “It’s challenging to comment on this issue without full details. I trust the investigating authorities to uncover the truth and motives behind these actions,” he said.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed that his administration has “nothing to hide” and is fully prepared to cooperate with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). He also called for investigations into the individuals allegedly offering bribes, suggesting they acted out of frustration after failing to achieve their objectives through legitimate channels.

Whistleblower Protections Questioned

The whistleblower’s lawyer has reportedly sought guarantees from the MACC to protect their client from investigation while presenting evidence. However, this request has been met with skepticism at the highest levels. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized that whistleblower protection cannot shield individuals who are themselves complicit in corrupt activities.

MACC Chief Commissioner Azam Baki has similarly stated that protections under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 apply only to individuals who are not involved in the misconduct they report. This has raised questions about the whistleblower’s credibility and the intentions behind the exposé.

Political Fallout

The scandal has cast a shadow over the Sabah political landscape, with opposition parties and critics closely monitoring the situation. Sabah Umno has denied any connection to the allegations, distancing itself from the exposé.

Hajiji remains steadfast in his leadership, urging the public to remain calm as investigations proceed. “Our focus remains on serving the people of Sabah and ensuring progress for the state. Let the authorities do their work, and let us not be distracted by baseless accusations,” he said.

A Test for Transparency

The allegations and the subsequent fallout highlight the ongoing challenges in maintaining transparency and accountability in governance. As the MACC and other authorities delve into the claims, the Sabah state government faces a critical test of its resilience and commitment to integrity.

With the next state election on the horizon, the outcome of this case could have significant implications for the political landscape in Sabah.
