The World Values Day is celebrated as an annual campaign on 17th October to increase the awareness and practice every nooks and corners of the world. The theme for 2024 campaign is Bringing Values To Life that must reach out connecting individual citizens, families, groups, organisations and communities. (www.worldvaluesday.com)

I realised that the drive towards ‘management excellence’ - mental, heart and hand (knowledge, inspiration and work) - needed to be supported by a systematic, long-term process for managers in the basics of human values. This effort ought to be fairly responsive to the deep & authentic commonality of values among various cultures, religions and social ethos. In other words, our character can be acquired by subscribing to the values. We must subscribe to the same positive values continuously over some period.

At this juncture I remember in 2001, Dr. S.K. Chakraborty, a distinguished Professor at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kolkata who was also the Founder of IIM Management Centre of Human Values, recognised Malaysia Airlines (MAS) had been engaged in this pioneering values task over a decade. At the request of MAS Academy, Professor Chakraborty offered us the services of IIM team, who had been spearheading the work in this field, to provide a long-term package of workshops on human values.

Hence, the Guru said, “The journey towards transformation of consciousness has to commence at the level of purifying values-as-means in our daily actions and choices. It has to be normative process. Since the normative and the sacred go together, management transformation by values can well be characterised as real corporate pilgrimage.”

Based on my experience facilitating values programs, I discovered the impact of organisational values on a business is profound and far-reaching. Values serve as the guiding management principles that shape a company's culture, decision-making processes, and overall operational framework for employee performance and corporate profitability.
