The Ministry of Finance (MoF) is in the final phases of refining various policies related to the high value goods tax (HVGT). These policies, aimed at regulating the taxation of high-value items, are undergoing meticulous examination to ensure minimal impact on low-income demographics.

In response to inquiries posted on the Parliament’s website, the ministry emphasized its commitment to scrutinizing and determining policies that safeguard the financial interests of all strata of society. Among the key considerations are the categorization of goods subject to HVGT and the establishment of threshold values delineating high-value items.

The ministry's clarification came in response to queries raised by Roslan Hashim (PN-Kulim), who sought clarification on the implications of the high value goods tax, particularly concerning jewelry valued at RM10,000 or above, and its repercussions on the middle 40 per cent household income group (M40) and below in Malaysia.

HVGT, previously recognized as the luxury goods tax, will be structured based on the nature and classification of items, taking into account their price thresholds. This nuanced approach seeks to ensure equitable taxation while discouraging excessive spending on luxury items.

The overarching objective behind the formulation of these policies is to strike a balance between revenue generation and social equity. By carefully delineating the criteria for HVGT imposition, the MoF aims to mitigate any adverse effects on vulnerable segments of the population, particularly the M40 and below.

Furthermore, the MoF's proactive stance underscores its responsiveness to evolving economic dynamics and societal needs. By engaging in a comprehensive review of HVGT policies, the ministry demonstrates its commitment to fostering a fair and transparent tax regime conducive to sustainable economic growth.

In conclusion, the MoF's ongoing efforts to refine HVGT policies reflect a judicious approach to fiscal governance. Through rigorous analysis and stakeholder consultation, the ministry endeavors to uphold principles of fiscal prudence while safeguarding the welfare of all citizens.
