The new Code of Ethics for journalists in Malaysia not only raises concerns about potential government overreach but also has significant implications for the practice of journalism and the role of journalists in society.

By emphasizing responsibilities such as being the voice of a plural society, maintaining transparency and integrity, and ensuring accuracy and fairness, the code sets a high standard for journalistic conduct.

However, the controversy surrounding the code highlights some key shortcomings that need to be addressed. One major concern is the lack of an independent oversight body to ensure that the code is applied fairly and transparently. Critics argue that without such oversight, there is a risk that the code could be used to suppress dissent and control the media.

To address these shortcomings, there is a need for the establishment of an independent media council that can regulate journalistic standards and ensure the credibility of the news. This would help to protect press freedom and ensure that journalists can carry out their duties without fear of government interference.

Additionally, there is a need for greater transparency and accountability in the implementation of the code. Journalists should be provided with clear guidelines on how the code should be applied and what constitutes a breach of ethics. This would help to prevent arbitrary enforcement of the code and ensure that journalists are able to carry out their work in a professional manner.

Ultimately, the goal should be to promote a free, independent, and responsible media that serves the public interest. This requires a commitment from both journalists and the government to uphold the highest standards of journalistic ethics and to protect press freedom as a fundamental pillar of democracy.
