Officials are hoping to reopen the Port of Baltimore to vessel traffic by the end of May, the US Army said in a news release on Thursday.
Currently, two temporary channels are open with depths of 11 and 15 feet. A third, which officials say will be 35-feet deep and 280-feet wide, will open at the end of April. The fourth channel will be permanent and would allow for ships as big as the “Dali” to navigate themselves in and out of the harbour. The “Dali” crew members still remain stuck on board the ship.
The ship’s owners have denied all responsibility for the deadly crash and seek a cap of $43.7m for any lawsuit payouts.
New video footage has been released showing dive teams entering the water around the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore – revealing the challenging conditions authorities are working in to remove the debris and get the port back up and running.
Inclement weather this week, including heavy rain and high winds, has made it difficult for officials to lift parts of the bridge out of the water.
