Ban on displaying cigarette products comes into force today

RETAILERS in Malaysia are no longer allowed to display cigarette products openly, from today, following a transition period given to shop owners to prepare for the new provision under a new legislation.

This measure is in line with the newly enforced Smoking Control for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), which aims to regulate the sale and promotion of tobacco products and e-cigarettes in the country.

The legislation, which was officially gazetted last October, gave retailers until April 1 to comply with the ban, with the Ministry of Health (MOH) offering an adequate grace period before the full enforcement of the law begins.

In a previous statement, the MOH revealed that over 51,000 shops are affected by the new rule prohibiting the display of tobacco products at sales counters.

Reports indicate that regions such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Selangor are fully prepared to implement the ban, having already informed local shop owners about the upcoming changes.

The prohibition on public display is part of Malaysia's ongoing efforts to reduce smoking rates, especially among young people and adolescents.

The government views this move as a crucial step in curbing the appeal of cigarettes and other tobacco-related products to the younger generation.

The public has been urged to play an active role in ensuring that retailers comply with the new regulations. By doing so, citizens can contribute to the success of this initiative to reduce smoking across the nation.

In addition, guardians and close family members are encouraged to take a more proactive stance in protecting loved ones from falling into the harmful addiction of tobacco products, which are known to have severe health risks.

The detrimental effects of smoking extend not only to the smokers themselves but also to those around them, due to second-hand smoke exposure.

Authorities are also called upon to take firm action in monitoring the implementation of this new regulation, with the aim of creating a positive change in the health landscape of Malaysia. – April 1, 2025
