Good news for our Singapore neighbours. Malaysia has partly revised a ban on export of “live premium” chickens to the island state.
As of Tuesday, June 14 only “kampung” and “black” chickens may be imported into Singapore but the export ban on commercial broiler chickens still continues indefinitely. Or until local supplies are stabilised.
These two varieties are considered premium birds but their broiler cousins which make up the bulk of Singapore’s imports from Malaysia are still banned.
A Singapore poultry company, Kee Song Food told the local Straits Times that it had received a letter from Malaysia’s Department of Veterinary Services authorising the company to export live premium chickens to the island republic.
According to Central News Agency (CNA), Singapore imports 34 per cent of its chickens from Malaysia.
They are brought into the country as live chickens then slaughtered and chilled locally.
But even with this recent approval the shortage of chickens in Singapore is far from over. It is not likely that everyone will be able to get their usual supply of chicken rice as easily as they did before the ban.
For instance broiler chicken is still the main revenue earner for an importer like Hup Heng Poultry Industries. They used to import about 100,000 to 120,000 broiler chickens a day and about 5,000 to 10,000 black chickens and 30,000 to 40,000 kampung chickens per day.
Thus some are of the opinion that this recent resumption of export is nothing but just “chicken feed”!
In any case, some Singaporeans on Facebook do thank our Primate Minister, Ismail Sabri for easing the export ban.
But for my Singapore friend Larry Lambert who is a chicken rice lover and needs his daily fix, a chicken is a chicken, be it black or an ordinary kampung variety. It’s better than no chicken at all, he said.
He is equally grateful to have his chicken rice again!
