KUALA LUMPUR – The body of a Malaysian ship crew member was retrieved from the sea at Chattogram Port yesterday, two days after he fell off a container vessel.

The Bangladesh Coast Guard recovered the body of Muhammad Isa Muhammad Veeramohan, 31, who was an ordinary seaman of the Malaysia-registered container ship MTT Sapangar, the Daily Star reports.

The paper, citing the Chittagong Port Authority and the coastguard, said Isa fell into the sea while working on the ship’s deck on Wednesday morning. The vessel had arrived from Singapore a day earlier and was at the Chattogram port’s outer anchorage area.

A search-and-rescue operation was launched immediately after Isa fell off the deck but was disrupted due to rough seas and bad weather.

The Malaysian’s body was found floating in the outer anchorage area at around 4pm yesterday by a coastguard patrol ship.

The body was handed to local police and later sent to hospital for an autopsy. – May 11, 2024
