A LORRY driver pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court today to a charge of attempting to kill a man in a shooting incident at an entertainment centre in Kuala Lumpur last month.
A. Lekeswaran, 27, was charged with attempting to kill the owner of a scrap metal business, B. Yoga Sundram, 41, in front of an entertainment centre in Jalan Telawi, Bangsar, at 3.15 am, April 22.
The charges were brought under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a fine, and if the act causes injury, the accused can be jailed for up to 20 years, if convicted.
Deputy Public Prosecutor J. Banusha did not offer bail as the offence committed was serious, and the victim is currently in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit, University of Malaya Medical Centre.
"Granting bail is inappropriate as it will give the accused an advantage to flee and the potential to harass the victim and prosecution witnesses.
"It is also understood that the accused is expected to face firearms-related charges at the Klang, Selangor Court. Therefore, I object to the bail application and request the court not to grant bail," he said.
Lawyer Muhammad Izz Khan Mohd Nor Khan, who represented the accused, applied for bail, in addition to informing the court that his client was ready to accept the additional conditions set by the court.
Judge Mazuliana Abdul Rashid, however, did not grant Lekeswaran bail and set June 10 for mention of the case.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department Director Datuk M Kumar earlier said that the incident, which occurred at about 3 am, stemmed from a dispute between two groups outside an entertainment centre.
One suspect, he said, is believed to have fired shots at the opposing group, while another pointed a fake pistol before they fled.
The incident resulted in a 41-year-old local man being injured in the stomach. – May 11, 2026
