Bank Islam has opened its first environmentally friendly branch in Malaysia, located in Temerloh, Pahang. This is in a bid to adopt sustainable practices in the bank’s business operations.

“Our first green branch uses solar energy as a clean renewable energy source, with the installation of solar panels on the roof. In addition, it also uses a rainwater harvesting system to collect and reuse the natural resources to promote efficient use of water,” said the group chief operating officer of Bank Islam, Mohamed Iran Moriff Mohd Shariff.

Additionally, the newly refurbished Temerloh branch – which is actually the 20th branch out of 135 bank branches nationwide – is also equipped with energy-efficient lighting with motion sensing technology.

“We spent an additional cost of RM50,000 for the installation of panels for this branch, but for the long term, it is expected to save energy between 20% and 30%,” Mohamed Iran elaborated, adding that Bank Islam hopes to open another five more similar branches in 2023.

Mohamed Iran also said that ultimately, this effort echoes Bank Islam’s commitment to sustainability and values under the concept of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) in its business operations.
