- Fraser Garden, 55, has been jailed for 13 years and six months at the High Court in Edinburgh after pleading guilty to causing the death of 74-year-old great-grandfather John Bell by dangerous driving.
- The court heard how Garden stole an unlocked, high-powered Maserati from a car showroom forecourt in Broughty Ferry near Dundee on 13 April before driving at speeds of up to 85mph in a 30mph residential zone.
- Garden lost control of the vehicle at a junction, clipping a kerb and crashing through a hedge into a garden where Mr Bell was working, pinning the former taxi driver against the wall of a house and causing fatal injuries.
- Along with the prison sentence, Lord Baird banned Garden from driving for more than 56 years, describing his actions as demonstrating a wicked disregard for the lives of others.
- Garden, who had 90 previous convictions and was subject to three separate driving bans on the day of the fatal crash, also admitted vehicle theft, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, and failing to provide a blood sample.
