The midfielder faces stepping up with Pedri out a month with a hamstring injury.
Xavi said, "He's very much a midfielder, he likes to play next to the striker, he's not as much of a midfielder as Pedri.
"He's used to making the difference near the box. He has fierce competition and he has to be prepared like everyone else. As Kessi has been. He is an example.
