Barry Manilow issues health update after cancelling another show

Barry Manilow cancelled his Saturday concert in Las Vegas after abruptly cutting short his show the previous night.

Manilow, 83, made a return to the Vegas stage on Thursday evening (8 October), following a six week hiatus from his residency due to health problems.

Then on Friday, the legendary crooner walked off stage after just two songs, reportedly telling the audience to “talk amongst yourselves” then failing to return.

The Saturday gig was cancelled soon after, with Manilow’s representatives stating: “After a triumphant welcome back concert on Thursday, Barry got hit with bronchitis and had to cancel his Friday and Saturday shows.”

Manilow’s Vegas residency was originally supposed to begin in February, but was initially postponed after the star revealed that he was being treated for lung cancer.

Since then, the singer has had to postpone or cancel a string of gigs on medical grounds, and in August cut short a Vegas show citing “technical difficulties”.

The singer announced that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer in December last year, revealing that his doctor had detected the disease early during an MRI scan.

He underwent surgery to remove a tumour on his left lung, and took medical advice to postpone the Vegas residency and several tour dates in order to recover.

Speaking to People in March, Manilow said the ordeal had been “a nightmare,” but noted that he was “one of the lucky ones” as “I don’t have to have chemo, radiation and all that stuff”.

His illness, he added, had made him “stop and think about: Have I done what I wanted to do, and have I made people happy? Have I been a good friend?” he told the magazine. “All of those cornball things that I’ve read for all of my life, I started to think about that, too. It really did stop me in my tracks.”

Over the summer, he shared his uncertainty over whether his voice will ever be the same following his treatment, telling Good Morning America: “My voice, I don’t know whether it’s coming back.”

“I did my first sound check about a month ago, and I didn’t sound like me at all,” Manilow added. “I just couldn’t believe that it’s over.”
