MANILA, Philippines — Basilan State College has officially become Basilan State University, 60 years after it opened with 120 students.
Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman Shirley C. Agrupis announced the institution's conversion during Pagpamahalayak in Isabela City on Oct. 2, 2026.
Under the leadership of the school President, Dr. Haipa Abdurahim-Salain, the institution underwent preparations and compliance work for university status.
The legislative effort was advanced in Congress by then-Basilan Lone District Rep. Mujiv S. Hataman, leading to the enactment of Republic Act 11554 in 2021.
CHED confirmed in August 2026 that the institution had met the requirements for conversion into a state university.
