BBC axing thousands of jobs in biggest restructure in years

  • The BBC is set to cut 2,000 jobs as part of a drive to reduce costs by 10 per cent over the next three years.
  • Staff were informed of the significant redundancies during an all-staff call on Wednesday afternoon, marking the largest reduction in BBC headcount in almost 15 years.
  • These cuts coincide with former Google executive Matt Brittin preparing to take over as director-general next month, following Tim Davie's resignation.
  • The corporation has also unveiled plans to drastically downsize the team responsible for covering national occasions and previously announced 130 job cuts at the BBC World Service.
  • The BBC faces substantial financial pressures, including competition from streaming giants and scrutiny over the value of the annual licence fee, which recently rose to £180.
