BBC loses £1.34 million as more households cancel TV licence

  • BBC TV licences decreased by 540,000 in the last financial year, bringing the total to 23.3 million active licences.
  • The decline is primarily attributed to fewer households consuming licensable content, with 3.7 million now stating they do not require a licence.
  • Over the past decade, the number of active licences has fallen by more than 2.5 million, contributing to a £1.34 million (26 per cent) drop in licence fee income.
  • BBC officials warn that the organisation's financial outlook has "deteriorated," making the current funding model unsustainable for its public service mission.
  • The BBC is pursuing reforms to its funding model and aims to achieve £500 million in savings by 2028/29, with £160 million already planned.
