Berjaya Cares Foundation (BCF), the charitable arm of Berjaya Corporation Berhad (BCorp), has contributed RM900,000 in financial aid to victims of the recent gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights.

The aid was presented by Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun, Chairman of BCF, during a handover ceremony held at the Putra Heights LRT station.

The funds were distributed to 300 families, each receiving RM3,000 in immediate cash assistance, meant to help them rebuild their homes and lives following the tragedy.

“In times of crisis, we believe it is our responsibility as a corporate citizen to stand with communities in need,” said Tan in a statement.

“This donation reflects our unwavering commitment to supporting humanitarian relief efforts and helping with recovery.”

Tan further paid tribute to the victims and the frontline personnel working to restore normalcy in the area.

“We honour the resilience of the victims and thank the frontline responders who are working tirelessly to aid recovery. Together, through collective action and compassion, we can bring hope and strength to those facing unimaginable challenges. Our hearts are with you today and in the long journey ahead.”

Tan also encouraged more companies and individuals to step forward to contribute to the good cause, bringing relief to the struggling victims in times of ordeal.

Over the years, BCF has been active in numerous community welfare initiatives across Malaysia, including primary school infrastructure upgrades, monsoon flood relief efforts, and in-kind donations to underprivileged university students.

The ceremony was attended by the transport minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Selangor investment, trade and mobility committee chairman Ng Sze Han.

Separately, Loke expressed his gratitude towards corporate organisations that have come forward to provide assistance to the victims of the fire in Putra Heights.

He mentioned that there are various forms of contributions from the private sector that complement the government’s efforts.

Other than BCF, Loke said that among other private companies which contributed to victims were Matrix Concept Holdings Berhad providing RM3,000 each to 100 families; and Carsome, which provided 50 cars to the victims for a month of free use.“

The support from many companies and the corporate community reflects a strong and commendable spirit among Malaysians. When we face disasters and hardship, everyone comes together and works hand-in-hand with the government to help one another,” he said during the handover of aid and loaned cars to the victims yesterday at the Putra Heights LRT station.

Loke also said that the government will rebuild houses for homeowners whose houses were completely destroyed.

“These homes will be rebuilt, and further announcements will be made, as stated by the Prime Minister. All government aid will be coordinated through the state government and Petronas.

“So, to the homeowners who suffered total loss, there’s no need to worry. The government will do everything necessary to help them get their homes back.”

Out of a total of 235 premises affected by the eight-hour inferno, 87 houses were declared a total loss and unfit for occupation, while 148 needed repairs.

A massive fire broke out last week at Putra Heights due to a gas leak leading to substantial loss for the victims.
