The Sarawak Police Commissioner, Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri, has issued a warning to the public about scammers pretending to be courier agents.
A woman in her 40s from Miri recently fell victim to this scam and filed a police report. According to Mohd Azman, the victim received a phone call from a man who claimed to be a courier service agent from Perak. The man told her that a parcel containing five MyKad, five ATM cards, and five passports had been sent to someone in Perak, and that she was the sender.
The victim was then connected to another number, supposedly to make a police report. However, the person she spoke to claimed to be a police officer and informed her that she was involved in human trafficking. The situation escalated when she was connected to a "Datuk" from Bukit Aman, who told her that she had an arrest warrant due to her account being linked to money laundering activities confirmed by "Bank Negara".
The scammer then instructed the victim to transfer her money to several accounts to assist in the investigation. Falling prey to the scam, the victim transferred RM250,000 to eight different bank accounts. It was only later when the "policeman" blocked her on WhatsApp that she realized she had been conned. In light of this incident, the public is advised to be cautious when receiving calls from unknown numbers.
If someone contacts you and accuses you of engaging in illegal activities, it is crucial to verify the claims with the police, your bank, or other relevant authorities before making any impulsive decisions. Scammers often try to pressure their victims into making hasty decisions by creating a sense of urgency and fear. In situations like these, it is important to remain calm and not give in to their tactics. It is also wise to consult with trusted individuals or seek professional opinions before taking any action.
Scammers are becoming increasingly cunning and creative in their approaches, so it is essential for individuals to be vigilant and protect themselves from falling victim to scams. By staying informed and following the advice provided by authorities such as Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri, the public can arm themselves with knowledge to help them ward off scammers and protect their hard-earned money.
