Kota Kinabalu: The Rotary Club of Kinabalu Sutera collected 480kg of trash in just two hours into an extensive Beach Cleanup Project (pic) at Tanjung Lipat, recently.
The three-hour event was in partnership with the NGO – Trash Hero, Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Technology and Management (TAR UMT), City Hall and Sabah Parks.
Their aim is to preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of Sabah’s coasts while addressing environmental concerns at one of the region’s most beloved beach sites.
The initiative saw participation of over 50 volunteers, including local residents, students and representatives from the partner organisations.

Read more Equipped with gloves and masks, the dedicated individuals combed the beach and its surrounding areas leading to the collection of an astonishing pile of plastic, discarded metal, and other pollutants.
The substantial amount of waste underscores the critical need for ongoing clean-ups and improved waste management strategies, particularly in coastal regions.
The drive not only showcased the power of community involvement but also served as an educational platform.
Representatives from the participating bodies provided insights on the importance of environmental conservation and the impact of littering on marine life and local ecosystems.
Kinabalu Sutera Community Service Chair, Ir Chaw Zie Der, said the solidarity and resolve reflected a collective potential to effect positive environmental change.
“We are extremely honoured to spearhead such a campaign and hope it motivates more community-led initiatives to safeguard our coastlines and natural habitats.
“This initiative signifies another significant achievement in the Rotary Club of Kinabalu Sutera’s continuous dedication to environmental causes and community service.
“It exemplifies the impactful results that can be achieved through cooperative efforts, fostering increased awareness and action towards environmental conservation,” he said.
