Beatrice and Eugenie living rent-free as King Charles picks up the bill, records show

  • The National Audit Office (NAO) report revealed that King Charles covers the accommodation costs for non-working royals Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie in royal palaces, with their rents previously based on outdated valuations.
  • The report also found that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor generated private income by subletting three cottages on his Royal Lodge estate for over two decades while paying a minimal 'peppercorn' rent, an arrangement criticised as 'outrageous' by former Liberal Democrat minister Norman Baker.
  • It was disclosed that the King also pays the rent for Prince and Princess Michael of Kent's Kensington Palace apartment from the Privy Purse, contradicting earlier public statements that they would pay for it themselves.
  • Prince William and Princess Catherine pay an annual rent of £307,200 for Forest Lodge, but the Crown Estate spent nearly £400,000 on renovations for the property and its accompanying cottages before their move.
  • The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh secured a 150-year lease for Bagshot Park with a £5 million payment, paying a peppercorn rent, and also earned private income from subletting part of the estate.
