Kuala Lumpur: Umno delegates at the party’s annual general assembly broke out in chants of “Bebas Bossku” and “Hidup Bossku” in support of former party president Najib Razak.

The Umno delegates in the 2,500-capacity Dewan Merdeka at the World Trade Centre raised their voices in support of the former prime minister, who is nicknamed “Bossku”, towards the end of party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s opening speech.

Najib is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence after he was convicted in the SRC International case. His lawyers and supporters claim he was not granted a fair trial.

Earlier, Umno members could be seen carrying posters with the message “Justice For Najib Razak” as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is a guest of honour at the Umno general assembly, entered the building.

In his speech, Zahid said Najib’s “spirit” remained with Umno although he was behind bars.

“We demand justice for Najib Razak,” he said to chants of “Bossku” from the delegates.

Zahid said Umno has never wavered in its stance that the former prime minister was not accorded a fair trial, adding that the party will continue to fight for Najib’s freedom.

Yesterday, Najib’s son, Nizar, said Umno Youth had promised to continue the fight for his father’s “comeback”.

Nizar said Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh told him this when he and his brother Nazifuddin received an award on behalf of their father at the Youth wing’s assembly.
