As Malaysians, we have a lot to reflect upon if we can’t speak proper Bahasa Melayu – Malaysia’s national language. If some foreigners have the tendency and effort to adapt the language, what’s your excuse?
Popular Nasi Kandar outlet in Penang, Nasi Kandar Sulaiman recently took to its FB page and shared a story about a “Mat Saleh” customer who hails from England.
“I asked where is he from. He said England, and he’s been staying here for 20 years now.”
The conversation immediately took place in BM, and the OP was impressed.
“I was so touched that he spoke in fluent BM to me, despite being from England.”
“They feel more superior speaking in English”
Nasi Kandar Sulaiman decided to share the story about the uncle from England as the OP was reminded of a few incidents where some Malaysian customers did not seem proud of the national language.
“I spoke to them in BM, but they insisted to respond in English. The feel more superior speaking in English,” Nasi Kandar Sulaiman wrote in the post.
The OP then sent a friendly reminder to everyone, saying that we should appreciate and love our national language as Malaysians.
“We should be embarrassed if we can’t speak BM as Malaysians. What would those foreigners who speak fluent BM think of us if we can’t even speak our national language?”
We studied at least 10 years of BM back in school. There’s no reason for us to be unable to converse in BM.
