Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled an attempt to smuggle out 6,000 cans of beer worth more than RM39,000 in Menumbok.

MMEA Sabah and Labuan Director First Admiral Maritim Che Engku Suhaimi Che Engku Daik said a boat patrolling around the waters of Menumbok detected a speedboat heading out of Klias River after loading goods into a lorry at 1.30am on Saturday.

“Realising the presence of MMEA personnel, all suspects who were unloading goods escaped, leaving behind the alcoholic drinks.

“The beers are believed to be smuggled out of Labuan for resale in mainland Sabah,” he said.
