Belgium recorded its hottest day since records began on Thursday, and temperatures are expected to rise further.
A weather station in Brussels recorded 34.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday afternoon, breaking a 50-year-old heat record set in 1976.
However, Thursday's record may be short-lived, according to Belgian media reports.
According to forecasts, temperatures could reach up to 40 degrees Celsius in some places.
Belgium's national meteorological institute (IRM) has issued a red weather warning - Belgium's highest alert level - for two eastern provinces on Friday.
Belgium’s record heat comes amid an early-summer heatwave pushing temperatures close to or above 40 degrees across parts of western Europe, triggering top-level weather warnings in countries including Britain, France, Spain and Germany.
