Rui Costa intends to try to convince Mourinho that they have the right project for him this summer.
The Portuguese giants have already started discussions with Mourinho's agent, Jorge Mendes.
Right now, Roger Schmidt is the head coach of Benfica. He joined in the summer of 2022 and has a contract until 2026.
Benfica must remove the German first if Mourinho is to arrive for next season.
Just last week, the former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Manchester United manager said on a return to Portugal: "Why? Never say no, especially in football. My life is football, I can train anywhere, I have no problems."
