Berlin Fashion Week opened on Thursday with a nostalgic tribute to travel, as designer William Fan transformed an old industrial hall in the north of the city into a runway, complete with the sound of aircraft engines playing as guests took their seats.
Actress Florence Kasumba, musician Balbina and other guests attended Fan's show. Kasumba will soon play editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly in the musical "The Devil Wears Prada" in Hamburg - a role made legendary on screen by Meryl Streep.
Fan told dpa his show was "a great homage" to travel. His collection featured details such as a currency exchange sign printed on a top. The hall's pillars were wrapped in plastic sheeting, similar to the luggage-wrapping service available at airports, with souvenirs displayed underneath.
A fascination with souvenirs
Fan said he had himself spent eight straight weeks travelling this year, describing it as an intense experience. He said he had been fascinated by the way people travel and collect things along the way - and that curating and collecting objects was also a personal passion.
Berlin Fashion Week runs until Sunday, with shows taking place at various locations across the capital, including the old ICC congress centre and the former Tempelhof airport. The collections on show are designs for spring and summer 2027.
