The glass dome and rooftop terrace of Berlin's Reichstag building will be closed to visitors over the weekend because of extreme heat, the German parliament said on Thursday.
The terrace and dome will be shut throughout Saturday and Sunday, according to a statement. Many people book tickets in advance and visits that had already been confirmed have been cancelled.
"Generally, for safety reasons, the dome and, in exceptional cases, the roof terrace of the Reichstag building may be closed if temperatures remain high," parliament website says.
The Reichstag building, home to Germany's lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, is one of Berlin's best-known landmarks.
The historic building, rebuilt after German reunification, features a glass dome by architect Norman Foster that attracts millions of visitors each year. It offers views over Berlin and a glimpse into the parliamentary chamber below.
The scorching conditions that have swept across much of Western Europe are set to move into eastern Germany this weekend, bringing temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius to Berlin.
